Propolis is generally well tolerated when used short-term, but allergic reactions are possible — especially if you're sensitive to bee products. The most common side effect when taken orally is headache; in one trial, about 7% of people taking 250 mg twice daily for 4 months reported mild headache.

When applied to the skin, propolis can occasionally cause contact dermatitis or cheilitis (inflammation of the lips) in sensitive individuals. Severe allergic reactions are rare but possible.

If you're allergic to bees or bee products, you're at higher risk. There isn't enough safety data to know whether propolis is okay in pregnancy, so it's best avoided during pregnancy.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, propolis might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that propolis water extract and the propolis constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, can inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, evidence from an animal model shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases INR, suggesting that propolis can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
