Benzoin Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Hawaii Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Benzoin against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: benzoin gum extract (dry form). Benzoin is a resin traditionally used to support wound healing, though the evidence for that benefit isn't yet strong enough to rate reliably.
The liquid also contains alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients to deliver the benzoin.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for benzoin in wound healing is insufficient to rate reliably right now. We don't have strong data yet on whether it actually works for that purpose in the way the label may suggest.
If wound healing is why you're considering it, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's the right choice for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Benzoin is generally well tolerated when used as intended — on the skin. The main risks are skin reactions: contact dermatitis (an itchy, inflamed rash from touching the substance) happens in about 8 to 9 out of 100 people who use compound benzoin tincture, and some develop hives, skin discoloration, or allergic reactions.
If you have sensitive skin or a history of contact allergies, patch-test first on a small area. Do not swallow this product.
Taken by mouth, benzoin can cause stomach inflammation and bleeding — a documented case involved someone who drank it by mistake. Breastfeeding safety is not well studied; talk with your healthcare provider before using it if you're breastfeeding.
