It can cause skin reactions, including contact dermatitis (swelling and irritation from touching the skin), urticaria (hives), and allergic reactions — in clinical trials, localized contact dermatitis occurred in 8 to 9 out of every 100 people who used compound benzoin tincture topically.
If you swallow it, there's a risk of stomach inflammation and bleeding — case reports describe serious gastrointestinal harm from taking it by mouth. Stick to topical use only.
Safety during breastfeeding is not well studied, so talk with your healthcare provider before using it if you're nursing.
