HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Best Astaxanthin by Doctor's Best
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin, a carotenoid pigment (a natural red-orange compound) that your body cannot make on its own, so you get it from food or supplements. The rest of the capsule is made up of inactive ingredients — extra virgin olive oil, mixed tocopherols (vitamin E), glycerin, and gelatin — that help deliver the astaxanthin and keep it stable.
Does it work?
Not established
Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate astaxanthin for the purposes listed: age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome. That means the research so far doesn't give us enough confidence to say it works or doesn't work for these conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety data are limited, so we don't have years of real-world experience to draw from. The most common side effects in trials were abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red fecal color (the stool turns reddish because of the pigment).
At higher doses, a small number of people reported increased bowel movements or severe stomach pain. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data, so the evidence advises against using it.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Moderate interactions are documented with drugs metabolized by the CYP3A4 enzyme (such as heart medications, immunosuppressants, and many others) and the CYP2B6 enzyme. Check your exact medications with the tool on this page before starting astaxanthin, because your liver may process them faster and they could become less effective.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety data are limited. If you take medications metabolized by your liver — especially heart drugs, immunosuppressants, or statins — check with your pharmacist first; astaxanthin may affect how your body processes them.
Pregnant and breastfeeding people should skip it. Run your medications through our checker before you start.

Best Astaxanthin by Doctor's Best Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Best Astaxanthin by Doctor's Best contains one active ingredient, astaxanthin, which interacts with medications metabolized by your liver.
The main concern is a Moderate interaction with drugs broken down by the CYP3A4 enzyme — astaxanthin may speed up how your liver clears these medications, potentially lowering their levels and effectiveness. This effect comes from in vitro (test tube) research; it hasn't been seen in people yet, but it's worth knowing about.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also has a Moderate interaction with drugs metabolized by the CYP2B6 enzyme, with the same potential effect — your liver may process them faster, making them less effective. Again, this is theoretical based on lab work, not confirmed in humans.
Altogether, these interactions span 661 individual medications. Before you start astaxanthin, use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions, especially if you take heart medications, immunosuppressants, statins, or other drugs your doctor says are important to maintain at a steady level.
