What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has one active ingredient: bitter melon fruit extract. The capsule also contains modified vegetable cellulose as an inactive filler.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence we hold on bitter melon isn't established for any condition we reviewed—amenorrhea, athletic performance, liver disease, constipation, diabetes, and indigestion all show insufficient reliable evidence to rate how well it works. That doesn't mean it does nothing, just that the data backing its use isn't strong enough for us to vouch for it.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
When taken by mouth, bitter melon is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal—things like heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and stomach discomfort—showing up in about 3% to 16% of people in studies.
Rarely, it can cause very low blood sugar (hypoglycemic coma) or seizures in children. During pregnancy, the safety data advises against it because seeds and high doses may cause uterine problems or other harm.
There isn't enough reliable safety information for breastfeeding, so it's best avoided while nursing. One case also reported kidney inflammation after long-term use of high-dose bitter melon extract, which resolved when the supplement was stopped.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications against these types before starting: antidiabetes drugs (Moderate severity—risk of low blood sugar), P-glycoprotein substrates (Moderate), and pazopanib, a cancer drug (Moderate). Use the tool on this page to search your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Bitter melon might appeal to someone looking for a traditional remedy, but evidence of its effectiveness isn't established. If you take antidiabetes drugs, a P-glycoprotein substrate medication, or pazopanib, this supplement isn't a simple add-on—talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should skip it.

Bitter Melon by Village Vitality Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Village Vitality's Bitter Melon contains one active ingredient—bitter melon fruit extract—that interacts with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with antidiabetes drugs (medications that lower blood sugar): taking bitter melon alongside them raises your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), sometimes significantly. You'll need to watch your blood glucose closely if you're on insulin or any diabetes pill.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Bitter melon may also increase levels of P-glycoprotein substrates—a group of drugs your intestines normally control the absorption of—potentially raising their levels in your blood and their side effects. Additionally, there's a case report of a patient taking pazopanib (a cancer drug) who developed acute pancreatitis days after starting bitter melon juice; bitter melon may theoretically increase pazopanib levels.
Although we could not identify every medication that falls into these categories, altogether these interactions span 282 individual medications. Use the interaction checker below to search your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Bitter Melon with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Bitter Melon fruit extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Taking bitter melon with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Bitter melon can lower blood glucose levels and might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs. This might increase the risk of hypoglycemia in some patients. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
P-Glycoprotein Substrates
Theoretically, bitter melon might increase levels of P-glycoprotein substrates.
Bitter melon might inhibit the p-glycoprotein (P-gp) intestinal pump and increase intracellular levels of P-gp substrates. In vitro research in intestinal cells shows that 1-monopalmitin, a constituent of bitter melon, increases levels of daunomycin, a P-gp substrate. Additionally, drinking bitter melon juice has been associated with a case of acute pancreatitis in a patient who had been taking pazopanib, a P-gp substrate, for 8 years. Researchers theorize that inhibition of P-gp led to increased levels of pazopanib, resulting in pazopanib-induced pancreatitis.
Pazopanib (Votrient)
Theoretically, bitter melon might increase levels of pazopanib, potentially increasing the risk of adverse effects.
In one case, a 65-year-old patient taking pazopanib for 8 years for renal cell carcinoma experienced signs and symptoms consistent with acute pancreatitis 4 days after drinking bitter melon juice at a dose of 100-150 mL daily. The patient's symptoms, amylase levels, and lipase levels improved upon discontinuation of bitter melon and pazopanib. Pazopanib treatment was re-initiated with no further evidence of pancreatitis. Researchers theorize that inhibition of P-glycoprotein by bitter melon led to increased levels of pazopanib, a P-glycoprotein substrate, resulting in pazopanib-induced pancreatitis.
