Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: black cherry powder. Black cherry has a long history in herbal medicine, particularly in commercial cough remedies, though the evidence base for specific health claims isn't established in our data.

There are no other inactive ingredients listed.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Wild Cherry product and its label doesn't state a use — see Wild Cherry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

Our data holds no effectiveness ratings for black cherry powder, so we can't tell you whether it's proven to work for any particular purpose. If a specific health claim interests you, your pharmacist can help you evaluate what research exists outside our monograph.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Black cherry is generally considered safe in the small amounts found in over-the-counter cough products. However, the plant contains compounds that can form cyanide — a serious concern if consumed in large quantities.

The safety data advises against use during pregnancy because the evidence suggests it may not be safe. For breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it while nursing.

In rare cases, very large amounts of wild cherry (around 300 grams) have caused cyanide poisoning with symptoms including headache, nausea, confusion, and severe difficulty breathing.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Wild Cherry.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 644 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check any medication you take with your pharmacist, especially cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins), antifungals, and immunosuppressants — all affected by the moderate-severity enzyme interaction documented here. The interaction hasn't been seen in humans yet, but the scale is significant enough to warrant a quick review of your personal list.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're taking medications metabolized by the enzyme CYP3A4 — a wide range of common drugs — check with your pharmacist before using this product. Pregnant people should avoid it.

The safety profile is generally solid at typical doses, but large amounts carry real risk of cyanide toxicity.

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

In vitro research suggests that wild cherry can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Theoretically, wild cherry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, so far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and others.
