Butcher's Broom is generally well tolerated short-term in healthy adults, but long-term safety data is limited. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, indigestion, and gastritis.

In one case, a person with poorly controlled diabetes experienced severe vomiting and diarrhea after five days and required hospitalization. When applied to skin, it can cause contact dermatitis (an allergic rash) in sensitive individuals.
