What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-carnitine, an amino acid that your body uses to transport fatty acids into cells for energy production. Each capsule provides 500 mg.
The capsule itself is made from gelatin.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence supports L-carnitine for treating L-carnitine deficiency — that's where it's established as effective. For other uses — high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), congestive heart failure (CHF), and angina — the evidence is labeled possibly effective, meaning there's some scientific support but it's not yet conclusive.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, though some people experience stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, or a fishy body odor. Seizures are rare but have been reported.
The safety data available is limited, and you should use this supplement only under medical supervision. There isn't enough reliable information about safety while breastfeeding, so caution is advised if you're nursing — talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before taking this if you're on a blood thinner like warfarin or acenocoumarol — L-carnitine may increase their effect. Also verify it with thyroid hormone replacement, since L-carnitine may reduce how well it works.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement is worth considering if you have a documented L-carnitine deficiency or want to explore it for heart-related conditions, but only after checking with your pharmacist. If you take a blood thinner or thyroid hormone, you need to verify it's safe first — these are meaningful interactions.
Your doctor or pharmacist can review your exact medications and decide if it's right for you.

Canitine 500 by GNC Women's Ultra Mega Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GNC Women's Ultra Mega Carnitine 500 contains L-carnitine, which interacts with blood thinners (anticoagulants) and thyroid hormone replacement.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners — both warfarin (Coumadin) and acenocoumarol (Sintrom) — where L-carnitine may strengthen their anticoagulant effect, raising your bleeding risk. There are case reports of elevated INR (a measure of blood thinning) when people took L-carnitine with acenocoumarol, and the theoretical risk applies to warfarin as well.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-carnitine may also reduce how well thyroid hormone replacement works by blocking the hormone from entering your cells properly. This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Altogether, these interactions span 19 individual medications. If you take a blood thinner or thyroid hormone, run them through the checker below before starting this supplement.

For each ingredient in Canitine 500 with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Carnitine
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.
