Chaga Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chaga against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chaga mushroom, a fungus traditionally used in teas and foods. The capsule also contains pullulan, an inert ingredient that holds the mushroom powder together.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for chaga's effectiveness isn't yet established in the data we hold. Our records show insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or COVID-19.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means rigorous human studies haven't been done yet or the results are mixed.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chaga is generally used in foods and teas, but human safety data are limited. There have been rare reports of kidney failure and acute kidney damage tied to very high chaga consumption, linked to its high oxalate content — a compound that can stress the kidneys in excess.
The safety data advises against using chaga during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, as there isn't enough information to know either way.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, immunosuppressants, or diabetes medications before adding chaga. These interactions are rated Moderate, and while they haven't been reported in humans, animal research suggests chaga could affect how these drugs work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chaga is a traditional mushroom supplement, but the science on whether it works for any specific condition isn't solid yet. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or drugs that suppress your immune system, you'll want to check with us before starting.
Pregnant or nursing? Skip it for now — we don't have enough safety data.

Chaga by Host Defense Mushrooms Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Host Defense Mushrooms Chaga contains one active ingredient — chaga mushroom — which has documented interactions with three medication types that we should review before you start.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (medications like warfarin or aspirin that prevent clots). Animal and lab research suggests chaga might increase bleeding risk by affecting how platelets clump together, though this hasn't been seen in actual patients yet.
The interaction is rated Moderate severity.
Chaga may also interfere with immunosuppressive drugs (medications that calm an overactive immune system) and with diabetes medications. Lab work indicates chaga can boost immune activity and lower blood sugar in animal studies, but again, these effects haven't been reported in people.
Both are Moderate severity.
Altogether, these interactions span 322 individual medications. Before you add chaga to your routine, run your specific prescriptions through the tool below.
