This chewable tablet contains 10 active digestive enzymes. Lactase breaks down milk sugar; Lipase handles fats; Amylase, Glucoamylase, and Diastase work on carbohydrates; Invertase breaks down table sugar; and Protease I, II, III, and IV split proteins.
Together they're meant to help your child's body digest food more completely. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — fructose, mannitol, natural fruit flavors, carmine color for appearance, maltodextrin, magnesium stearate, and silica — that help hold the chewable together and make it taste good.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence we hold is limited. Lactase is rated effective for lactose intolerance — if your child can't digest milk sugar well, this ingredient should help.
For the other enzymes — Lipase for indigestion or bowel inflammation, and the Proteases — the data on file shows insufficient evidence to say whether they work for those uses. We have no effectiveness ratings for Amylase, Invertase, Glucoamylase, or Diastase.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lipase, Lactase, and the Proteases are generally well tolerated in most children, but a few cautions apply. Lipase and the Proteases can occasionally cause digestive upset or allergic reactions; if your child has a serious digestive condition, use only under your doctor's guidance.
Lactase rarely causes contact allergies in people who handle powdered form, but that's not typical with the chewable tablet. For pregnancy or breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data on Lipase to know either way — talk with your doctor before using.
Lactase is likely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but check first. The Proteases haven't been studied in pregnancy, so they're best avoided unless your doctor prescribes them; breastfeeding data is also limited, so ask your healthcare provider.
