Women's Suprema Probiotic contains 9 active ingredients: live bacterial strains (probiotics) and a prebiotic blend to feed them. The probiotics include Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, and several others.
The prebiotic blend contains fructooligosaccharides and FiberAid (larch arabinogalactan) — these are carbohydrates that act as food for the beneficial bacteria. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients: cellulose, water, magnesium stearate, and calcium silicate.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for this product's benefits is mixed and limited. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, but the data aren't strong.
Bifidobacterium breve and the other strains have either insufficient evidence or show no real benefit for the conditions studied. Fructooligosaccharides and larch arabinogalactan have not been reliably studied for the health claims often made about probiotics and prebiotics — we hold insufficient evidence for most of their uses.
This doesn't mean they don't work; it means the science isn't settled yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Bifidobacterium breve is also generally well tolerated but warrants caution in people who are very ill or immunocompromised — there have been rare cases of serious infection in critically ill patients and preterm infants.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, and abdominal pain can occur with probiotics and prebiotics, though they're usually mild and uncommon. Fructooligosaccharides and larch arabinogalactan may cause gas and bloating, especially at higher doses.
No pregnancy or breastfeeding safety data are on file for any of these ingredients, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're pregnant or nursing.

Bifidobacterium breve Bb-03
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacilli acidophilus La-14
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, larch arabinogalactan might interfere with immunosuppression therapy due to immunostimulant effects. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and other drugs.
