Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: choline (260 mg per capsule as choline bitartrate). Choline is a nutrient your body uses for brain function, cell structure, and nerve signaling.

The capsule also contains cellulose and rice flour as inactive ingredients.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Choline's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: increase acetylcholine levels.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, Cognitive function, Dementia, Infant development, Neural tube birth defects — and 3 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Choline is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Age-related cognitive decline (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Choline is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Alzheimer disease, Cognitive function, Dementia, Neural tube birth defects, and more.

The evidence we hold on choline for specific uses is mixed. For athletic performance, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective.

For bronchitis, age-related cognitive decline, liver disease related to intravenous nutrition (TPN-associated hepatic steatosis), hay fever, and Alzheimer disease, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to make a rating. If you're considering choline for one of these purposes, talk with your pharmacist about what the current research shows.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Choline is well tolerated at normal doses. High-dose supplements—particularly doses exceeding 3.5 grams daily—can cause side effects.

At doses of 9 grams or more daily, some people have reported fishy body odor, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and sweating. Much higher doses (32 grams daily) have been linked to more severe gastrointestinal upset.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, choline is considered likely safe, though your needs are higher while nursing. Use prenatal vitamins or supplements only as your doctor advises rather than on your own.

Meds to double-check

Minor interactions only
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Choline.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 16 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take atropine or other anticholinergic drugs (medications that block acetylcholine activity), check your specific medication on this page before starting choline, as it may reduce how well the drug works.

Atropine

Theoretically, choline might decrease the effects of atropine in the brain.
Animal research shows that administering choline one hour before administering atropine can attenuate atropine-induced decreases in brain levels of acetylcholine. Theoretically, concomitant use of choline and atropine may decrease the effects of atropine.

Choline Bitartrate 260 mg by Advance Physician Formulas: Common Questions

Does Choline Bitartrate 260 mg by Advance Physician Formulas interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Choline Bitartrate 260 mg has a known interaction with 16 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Choline Bitartrate 260 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is 260 mg of choline a high dose?
No. The tolerable upper limit for choline is 3.5 grams (3,500 mg) daily—the dose at which side effects become more likely. This product provides 260 mg per capsule, which is well below that threshold. Most people won't experience side effects at this dose.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Choline is rated likely safe during pregnancy and lactation, and your body actually needs more of it while nursing. However, any supplement in pregnancy or while breastfeeding should be discussed with your doctor first to make sure it's right for your situation.
What's the fishy smell some people report?
At high doses, choline can be broken down by gut bacteria into a compound called trimethylamine, which creates a fishy body odor. This happens mainly at doses well above what's in this single capsule.
Does choline actually improve memory or brain function?
The evidence we have isn't strong enough to rate choline as effective for age-related cognitive decline or Alzheimer disease. If brain support is your goal, talk with your pharmacist about what the research actually shows for this and other supplements.
