HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Codonopsis Root Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This powder is pure codonopsis root—one active ingredient with no added fillers or binders. Codonopsis, also known as Codonopsis pilosula, is a root used in traditional herbal practice, mainly for respiratory and digestive support.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold for codonopsis is insufficient to rate its usefulness for asthma, cancer, respiratory tract infections, indigestion (dyspepsia), or high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia). While traditional use and some lab research suggest potential benefits, we don't have reliable clinical data to confirm whether this powder actually works for any of these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Codonopsis is generally well tolerated in the traditional food-like doses used historically, but high-quality safety data are limited. Very large doses—30 to 60 grams—may cause chest pain, heart rhythm problems, throat pain, or voice loss.
Allergic reactions, including severe ones like anaphylaxis and hives, have been reported; one case involved a person who reacted to 20 grams of codonopsis root. The safety data advises against codonopsis during pregnancy because there isn't enough reliable information.
Breastfeeding safety is also unknown, so avoid it unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs—codonopsis may increase bleeding risk (Moderate severity). Also flag it if you take diabetes medications or abiraterone (Zytiga), as codonopsis may affect how these work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Codonopsis Root Powder might appeal to someone interested in traditional herbal support, but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't established in our data. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or abiraterone, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
Even if you don't take those medications, it's worth reviewing your full medication list with your pharmacist because this ingredient interacts with many drugs.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Codonopsis Root Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection contains one active ingredient—codonopsis—that interacts with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (Major severity): codonopsis may increase your bleeding risk. A small clinical study showed that codonopsis liquor slowed down platelet clumping in people with heart disease, though it didn't affect clot-breaking drugs like t-PA.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Codonopsis also has Moderate interactions with diabetes medications and with abiraterone (Zytiga, a prostate cancer drug). With diabetes drugs, it may raise your low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) risk because lab and animal research suggest codonopsis itself has blood-sugar-lowering effects.
With abiraterone, animal studies hint that codonopsis might speed up how your body clears the drug, potentially weakening its effect.
We held no interaction data for other ingredients because this powder contains no fillers or additives. Altogether, these interactions span 211 individual medications.
Before you start codonopsis, run your exact medications through the checker on this page, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.

For each ingredient in Codonopsis Root Powder with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Codonopsis, Powder
Abiraterone (Zytiga)
Theoretically, taking codonopsis root with abiraterone might reduce the levels and therapeutic effects of abiraterone.
Animal research in rats shows that intragastric administration of codonopsis root along with abiraterone every 2 days for 2 weeks seems to increase the clearance of abiraterone and reduce the overall exposure and time to maximum concentration. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, codonopsis liquor might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
A small clinical study in adults with coronary heart disease shows that consuming Codonopsis pilosula liquor for 4 weeks inhibits platelet aggregation but does not affect tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) or plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI).
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, codonopsis might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Laboratory and animal research suggest that codonopsis has antidiabetic effects.
