Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Chlorophyll 450 mg is a single-ingredient supplement — each capsule contains 450 mg of chlorophyll, the green pigment found in plants. The capsule itself is made from gelatin and water, which are inactive ingredients that hold the chlorophyll in place.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Chlorophyll product and its label doesn't state a use — see Chlorophyll's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence on what chlorophyll actually does is limited. The data we hold does not establish reliable effectiveness for genital herpes, wound healing, herpes zoster (shingles), nonmelanoma skin cancer, or pancreatitis.

In other words, we don't have enough high-quality research to say whether it works for any of these purposes.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chlorophyll is generally well tolerated when taken short-term, but high-quality safety data are limited. The most common side effect is photosensitization — increased sensitivity to sunlight, which can cause severe burning and blistering.

Rare cases have reported pseudoporphyria, a serious condition where skin becomes fragile and easily injured. There is not enough reliable safety information to use chlorophyll during pregnancy, so it should be avoided.

Safety during breastfeeding is also unknown, so avoid it unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chlorophyll.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 337 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Stop and check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase sun sensitivity) or methotrexate. These are the documented concerns with chlorophyll.

If you're unsure whether your medications fall into either category, use the interaction checker below or ask your pharmacist before starting.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Chlorophyll may be worth considering if you're interested in its traditional uses, but the evidence of effectiveness is thin. Before you start, check your medications — especially photosensitizing drugs and methotrexate — with your doctor or pharmacist.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding require a talk with your healthcare provider. If you take it, be cautious about sun exposure and watch for unusual skin reactions.

Methotrexate (Trexall, Others)

Theoretically, chlorophyll may reduce the clearance of methotrexate.
In one case report, a 54-year-old male developed delayed clearance of intravenous high-dose methotrexate with concomitant use of chlorophyll. When chlorophyll was stopped 2 days prior to methotrexate treatment, methotrexate clearance was unaffected.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Photosensitizing Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyll with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. In two case reports, pseudoporphyria developed after oral intake of chlorophyll. Theoretically, concomitant use with other photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate this effect.

Chlorophyll 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Chlorophyll 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Chlorophyll 450 mg has a known interaction with 337 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Chlorophyll 450 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take chlorophyll if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — not enough reliable safety information exists for pregnancy, so it should be avoided. Safety during breastfeeding is also unknown. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you in either situation.
What's the main side effect I should watch for?
Photosensitization — your skin becomes overly sensitive to sunlight, causing severe burning and blistering. Certain carotenoids like beta-carotene may help reduce this effect, but you should limit sun exposure while taking chlorophyll.
Does chlorophyll actually work for anything?
The evidence is too thin to say. We don't have reliable research showing it works for genital herpes, wound healing, shingles, skin cancer, or pancreatitis — the main conditions people ask about.
What if I take methotrexate?
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting chlorophyll. One case report showed chlorophyll may slow how your body clears methotrexate, allowing it to build up. Stopping chlorophyll a couple of days before your methotrexate dose may help, but that's a decision for your prescriber.
What are the inactive ingredients?
The capsule is made from gelatin and water — no fillers or binders beyond those.
