Alectinib Hydrochloride falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorophyll interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyll with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. In two case reports, pseudoporphyria developed after oral intake of chlorophyll. Theoretically, concomitant use with other photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate this effect.

Here's the thing with this combo: it's not about how your body processes alectinib (Alecensa). It's about your skin. Alectinib already carries a known risk of sun sensitivity, meaning you can sunburn faster or get a rash with less time outside than usual. Chlorophyll supplements have also been linked to light sensitivity in a couple of case reports. Put the two together and, at least in theory, you may be more prone to skin reactions.

I'll be honest, this is mostly a theoretical concern based on limited reports, not strong proof. Still, it's easy to play it safe: wear sunscreen, cover up, and limit strong sun while on alectinib. Before adding a chlorophyll supplement, run it by your oncology pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Alectinib Used For?

Brand name: Alecensa

Alecensa (alectinib) is used in adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for a gene change called ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase). Your tumor must be confirmed ALK-positive by an FDA-approved test before starting treatment.

Alecensa is approved for two situations: as adjuvant treatment (after surgery to remove the tumor, for tumors that are large enough or have spread to nearby lymph nodes) to help prevent the cancer from coming back, and for metastatic NSCLC (cancer that has already spread to other areas of the body).
