METHOTREXATE (Trexall, others)

Theoretically, chlorophyll may reduce the clearance of methotrexate.
In one case report, a 54-year-old male developed delayed clearance of intravenous high-dose methotrexate with concomitant use of chlorophyll. When chlorophyll was stopped 2 days prior to methotrexate treatment, methotrexate clearance was unaffected.

Here's the concern with pairing chlorophyll and methotrexate. Your body normally clears methotrexate out fairly steadily, but the worry is that chlorophyll may slow that removal down. If the drug hangs around longer than it should, levels can creep up, and that's when you start seeing more of methotrexate's known troubles: mouth sores, nausea, low blood counts, fatigue, or liver and kidney strain.

I want to be honest about how strong this is. It comes from a single case report in someone getting high-dose IV methotrexate, and the rest is theory. When chlorophyll was stopped two days before treatment, clearance went back to normal. Still, methotrexate is a drug where small shifts matter, so please check with your oncologist, rheumatologist, or pharmacist before combining the two.

Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants and algae, and supplements often use a stable form called chlorophyllin. What Is Methotrexate Used For?

Brand names: Rheumatrex, Otrexup, Rasuvo, Reditrex

Methotrexate treats a wide range of serious conditions. In cancer care, it is used for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, osteosarcoma, breast cancer, head and neck cancer, and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (a rare tumor related to pregnancy). It is also used to prevent and treat meningeal leukemia (cancer affecting the lining of the brain and spinal cord).

Outside of cancer, methotrexate is prescribed for adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), children with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (a form of childhood arthritis), and adults with severe psoriasis that hasn't responded well to other treatments.
