Devil's claw is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but digestive upset is common. The most frequent side effects reported in trials are allergic skin reactions, diarrhea, and indigestion.

Gastrointestinal complaints showed up in 9% to 18% of patients taking a specific extract in studies, with diarrhea alone in about 8% of another group. Rarely, headache, dizziness, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and loss of appetite have been reported, though it's unclear whether devil's claw caused them.

Very rare cases of gastrointestinal bleeding have been documented. Avoid devil's claw during pregnancy because it may affect the uterus and safety hasn't been established.

Don't use it while breastfeeding either—there isn't enough safety information.
