Devil's club is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but digestive upset — including diarrhea, indigestion, and stomach pain — is common. In trials, 9 to 18 percent of people taking certain extracts reported gastrointestinal complaints, and about 8 percent reported diarrhea.

Rarely, gastrointestinal bleeding has been reported. Some people have also experienced headache, ringing in the ears, loss of appetite, loss of taste, dizziness, drowsiness, or insomnia, though it's unclear whether devil's claw caused these.

Avoid this product during pregnancy because it may affect the uterus and safety hasn't been established. Also avoid it while breastfeeding because there isn't enough safety information.
