Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product has one active ingredient: durian fruit extract in dry form. Durian is a tropical fruit, and this extract concentrates its compounds.

The product also contains two inactive ingredients — glycerin and water — which help preserve and deliver the extract.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Durian product and its label doesn't state a use — see Durian's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

We don't hold effectiveness data for durian fruit extract in the facts provided, so we can't tell you what this product is intended to do or whether it works for any particular purpose. If you're considering it for a specific reason, ask your pharmacist what the research actually shows.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Durian fruit extract is generally well tolerated as a food in normal amounts, though it's high in sugar and calories — something to keep in mind if you're watching those. The safety data on supplement forms is limited, so use caution if you're taking this as a supplement rather than eating the fruit as food.

A small number of case reports describe allergic reactions (hives, nasal congestion, runny nose, throat discomfort) and digestive upset (abdominal discomfort, gas, diarrhea, vomiting) after eating durian, though these are rare. Pregnancy and lactation safety data is not on file for this ingredient, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding and considering this product.

Alcohol (Ethanol)

There is a traditional belief that ingestion of alcohol with durian can be fatal. A case report from 1941 describes an adult in India who developed acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis and died after drinking alcohol with durian, but there have been no other published reports since. A study in mice given homogenized durian fruit flesh in 10% ethanol did not demonstrate any toxicity. However, evidence from in vitro research shows that durian extract can inhibit alcohol dehydrogenase. This activity is similar to the effects of disulfiram. In theory, concomitant use might cause effects similar to disulfiram-ethanol reactions. Until more is known, avoid concomitant use of durian and alcohol.

Durian Alcohol Free by Herbal Terra: Common Questions

Does Durian Alcohol Free by Herbal Terra interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Durian Alcohol Free has a known interaction with 1 medication. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Durian Alcohol Free contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I drink alcohol?
You should avoid taking this product with alcohol. There's a traditional belief — backed by one historical case report from 1941 — that the combination can be serious. Modern human research is scarce, but the concern is documented. If you drink, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
What does durian fruit extract do?
We don't have effectiveness data on file for what this ingredient is meant to treat or whether it works for any particular health purpose. Ask your pharmacist what the research shows for your specific reason for considering it.
Is it safe to take as a supplement?
Durian is generally well tolerated as a food in normal amounts, but safety data on supplement forms is limited. Because it's high in sugar and calories, and because we don't have complete safety information for the extracted form, talk with your provider before starting — especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or have digestive issues.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't have safety data for durian in pregnancy or lactation, so there isn't enough information to know either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice based on your situation.
Are there any side effects?
A small number of case reports describe allergic reactions — hives, nasal congestion, runny nose, and throat discomfort — and digestive upset like stomach discomfort, gas, diarrhea, or vomiting after eating durian. These are rare, but if you're prone to food allergies or have a sensitive stomach, that's worth keeping in mind.
