Essential Softgel Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Essential Softgel against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Essential Softgel by Blueprint Bryan Johnson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Essential Softgel contains 7 active ingredients. Three forms of vitamin K—Vitamin K1, Vitamin K2, and Vitamin K—support blood clotting and bone health.
Lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin are carotenoids (plant pigments) that concentrate in your eyes and support vision and cellular health. Astaxanthin is a similar pigment with antioxidant properties.
The product contains no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The vitamin K forms in this product are rated effective for supporting clotting factors and treating clotting deficiencies, and possibly effective for bone health (osteoporosis). For eye health, lutein and zeaxanthin are rated possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
Lycopene is rated possibly effective for prostate cancer but possibly ineffective for bladder cancer and diabetes. Astaxanthin's effectiveness hasn't been established in the data we hold—the evidence for its claimed benefits (cognitive decline, vision, skin, athletic performance) is insufficient to rate.
Zeaxanthin is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration but has insufficient evidence for its other claimed uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Vitamin K is generally well tolerated when taken orally. The most common side effects are mild: nausea, diarrhea, and stomach upset.
Lycopene can cause gastrointestinal effects including diarrhea, bloating, nausea, and vomiting. Astaxanthin may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools; a few people in studies experienced more severe stomach pain at higher doses.
Zeaxanthin and lutein are generally well tolerated with no adverse effects documented at typical supplement doses. For pregnancy, vitamin K and lutein are rated likely safe, and zeaxanthin is rated likely safe.
Lycopene supplements are not well studied in pregnancy—the safety data advises against them unless your doctor advises otherwise. Astaxanthin has insufficient safety data—the safety data advises against use in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before taking Essential Softgel, check with your pharmacist or doctor if you take: blood thinners like warfarin or antiplatelet drugs such as aspirin (Major and Moderate interactions with vitamin K and lycopene), diabetes medications (Moderate interaction with zeaxanthin), or medications metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes (Moderate interaction with astaxanthin—this includes many statins, immunosuppressants, and others). The vitamin K forms are the most serious concern if you're on warfarin.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take warfarin or any blood thinner, do not start this product without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first. If you take diabetes medications or medications processed through your liver's enzyme systems, check with us before adding it.
For healthy people without those medications, this product is generally well tolerated, though stomach upset is possible.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Essential Softgel by Blueprint contains multiple ingredients with documented interactions, most notably with blood thinners.
Vitamin K1, Vitamin K2, and Vitamin K (listed as a separate ingredient) all carry a Major interaction with warfarin (Coumadin). Vitamin K can reverse warfarin's blood-thinning effects, which could put you at serious risk of clotting if you're on that medication.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Lycopene carries a Moderate interaction with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners and aspirin-like medications). While in-vitro research shows lycopene has blood-thinning properties, the clinical significance in humans isn't fully established.
Astaxanthin has two Moderate interactions: it may theoretically decrease levels of drugs metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzymes. These enzyme systems clear a large number of prescription medications—including many statins, immunosuppressants, and others—but this effect has only been observed in the lab, not yet in people.
Zeaxanthin carries a Moderate interaction with diabetes medications; theoretically it could increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), though population studies of dietary intake haven't confirmed this risk. Altogether, these interactions span 827 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Essential Softgel with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Lycopene
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking lycopene with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro research shows that lycopene has antiplatelet effects.
Zeaxanthin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Vitamin K1
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Vitamin K can antagonize and reverse the therapeutic effects of warfarin.
Vitamin K antagonizes the effects of warfarin. Excessive vitamin K intake, either from supplements or from changes in the diet, can reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
