Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
NatureWise Flaxseed Oil is a softgel containing 4 active ingredients: polyunsaturated fat, linoleic acid, oleic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid. These are all fatty acids naturally present in flaxseed, which is why the product is called flaxseed oil.
The softgels also contain inactive ingredients (gelatin, glycerin, and purified water) that help deliver the oil in capsule form.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Oleic acid, one of the fatty acids in this product, is rated possibly effective for high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) and coronary heart disease (CHD). We don't have effectiveness ratings on file for the other active ingredients in this flaxseed oil product.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Oleic acid is generally recognized as safe when you eat it in normal food amounts, like those from olive oil. At supplement-level doses, though, the safety data is limited — it hasn't been well studied in those concentrated amounts.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, food amounts are considered fine, but concentrated supplements like this one lack good safety data. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether this product is right for you in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs — including insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, or other blood sugar medications — check your specific medications with the tool below before taking this product. Oleic acid may increase their effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Flaxseed oil may be worth considering if you're interested in heart health or cholesterol support, but it's important to check it against any antidiabetes medications you take. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have diabetes, have a conversation with your pharmacist before starting.

Flaxseed Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, using flaxseed oil in combination with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding.
Small clinical studies show that consuming flaxseed oil might decrease platelet aggregation and increase bleeding time.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining flaxseed oil with other antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical evidence suggests that long-term consumption of flaxseed oil can modestly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while other clinical research shows no effect.
Ezetimibe (Zetia)
Concomitant use of flaxseed oil and ezetimibe reduces the absorption of alpha-linolenic acid from flaxseed oil.
In one clinical study, concomitant consumption of ezetimibe 10 mg daily with flaxseed oil 2 grams providing 1 gram of alpha-linolenic acid daily blocked the absorption of alpha-linolenic acid, resulting in an overall reduction in alpha-linolenic plasma levels from baseline.
