What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a compound your nervous system naturally produces. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — cellulose, gelatin, magnesium silicate, vegetable stearate, and silica — which help form and deliver the dose.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for GABA isn't established in our data. The product is marketed for conditions including chronic bronchitis, anxiety, ADHD, athletic performance, cerebral palsy, and others, but we have insufficient reliable evidence to rate how well it works for any of these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
GABA is generally well tolerated in the short term when taken by mouth, though long-term safety hasn't been well studied. The most common side effects reported are drowsiness, stomach upset, minor throat burning, muscle weakness, and nausea.
One case of temporary loss of menstruation was reported in a patient taking GABA with another supplement. Overall, there isn't enough safety information to use it without your doctor's guidance.
While breastfeeding, the data are too limited — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you use blood pressure medications — GABA may lower your pressure further. Also flag any sedating medications you take (sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, opioids) in case the sedative effect adds up.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
GABA may be worth considering if you're interested in its purported benefits and have no blood pressure or sedating medications to worry about — but the evidence for what it actually does isn't clear. If you take any blood pressure meds or sleep aids, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Long-term safety data are sparse, so discuss this with your healthcare provider before committing to regular use.

GABA
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking GABA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical research shows that GABA can decrease blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, GABA might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Endogenous GABA has well-established relaxant effects and GABA(A) receptors have an established physiological role in sleep. However, the effects of GABA supplements are unclear, as it is unknown whether exogenous GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier. Although there have been limited reports of drowsiness or tiredness with GABA supplements, these effects have not been widely reported in clinical studies. Additionally, intravenous GABA 0.1-1 mg/kg has been shown to induce anxiety in a dose-dependent manner.
