GastroThera Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Klaire Labs
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking GastroThera against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of GastroThera by Klaire Labs
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
GastroThera contains four ingredients. L-Glutamine is an amino acid used to support sickle cell disease and recovery from illness or trauma.
Inulin is a type of fiber that may help with constipation, blood sugar, and weight. N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine (NAG) is a compound that supports joint health and is likely effective for osteoarthritis.
Acacia is also included. There are no inactive fillers listed for this powder.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed. L-Glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease and possibly effective for recovery after surgery or critical illness and for HIV-related wasting.
Inulin is possibly effective for constipation, weight management, and blood sugar control. N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine is likely effective for osteoarthritis but has insufficient evidence for back pain, skin aging, or liver health.
We hold no effectiveness data for acacia.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine and inulin are rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation. N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine is not recommended in pregnancy and should be avoided while breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise.
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated but should be used only under medical supervision if you have kidney or liver disease. Common side effects across the ingredients include bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, and nausea — especially at higher doses.
Rare allergic reactions to glucosamine have been reported, including severe cases and asthma flare-ups in sensitive people.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Double-check these with your pharmacist: warfarin or other blood thinners (Major risk), anticonvulsants or seizure medications (Moderate risk), and antidiabetes drugs or acetaminophen (Minor risk).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
GastroThera may help with joint health, gut function, and blood sugar, but it's not for everyone. If you take warfarin, seizure medications, or antidiabetes drugs, you need to check with your pharmacist first.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding have safety limits — talk to your doctor if either applies to you.

N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine monograph & interactionsGastroThera by Klaire Labs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GastroThera by Klaire Labs contains four ingredients, and one of them — N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine — has a documented Major-severity interaction you need to know about.
If you take warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner, glucosamine might increase its effect and raise your bleeding risk. Two case reports showed significant increases in blood-thinning measures when patients added glucosamine to their warfarin, so this one requires a conversation with your doctor before you start.

L-Glutamine carries a Moderate interaction with anticonvulsants (seizure medications). Glutamine breaks down into glutamate, a brain chemical that might work against seizure drugs, though this hasn't been seen in humans yet — it's theoretical.
If you take any seizure medication, check with your pharmacist.
Inulin has a Minor interaction with antidiabetes drugs. It may theoretically increase low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) risk, though the evidence is unclear.
N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine also carries Minor interactions with antidiabetes drugs and acetaminophen (Tylenol). We couldn't check acacia against our drug database.

For each ingredient in GastroThera with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Acacia
Amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox)
Gum arabic can reduce the absorption of amoxicillin.
A small study in healthy volunteers shows that taking amoxicillin and gum arabic concurrently significantly reduces the absorption of amoxicillin. Separate doses of amoxicillin from gum arabic by at least 2 hours.
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, gum arabic can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber content.
Gum arabic has been used as a suspending osmotic agent in drug formulations. It might improve bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs like naproxen, but reduce absorption of polar drugs like amoxicillin. To avoid changes in absorption, take gum arabic 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Glucosamine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin and increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In two individual case reports, glucosamine/chondroitin combinations were associated with a significant increase in international normalized ratio (INR) in patients previously stabilized on warfarin. In one case, the increase in INR occurred only after tripling the dose of a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement from 500 mg/400 mg daily to 1500/1200 mg daily. Additionally, 20 voluntary case reports to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) have linked glucosamine plus chondroitin with increased INR, bruising, and bleeding in patients who were also taking warfarin. There have also been 20 additional case reports to the World Health Organization (WHO) that link glucosamine alone to increased INR in patients taking warfarin. The mechanism of this interaction is unclear. Glucosamine is a small component of heparin, but is not thought to have anticoagulant activity; however, animal research suggests that it might have antiplatelet activity.
Topoisomerase Ii Inhibitors
Theoretically glucosamine may induce resistance to topoisomerase II inhibitors.
In vitro research suggests that glucosamine might induce resistance to etoposide (VP16, VePesid) and doxorubicin (Adriamycin) by reducing inhibition of topoisomerase II, an enzyme required for DNA replication in tumor cells. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Others)
Acetaminophen might interfere with the activity of glucosamine sulfate by interacting with the sulfate portion.
Anecdotal reports suggest that adding glucosamine to an acetaminophen regimen might decrease pain control in patients with osteoarthritis. Some research suggests that the sulfate portion of glucosamine sulfate might contribute to its effect in osteoarthritis. Since acetaminophen metabolism requires sulfur and reduces serum sulfate concentrations, acetaminophen could theoretically interfere with the action of glucosamine sulfate. Conversely, the administration of sulfate could theoretically decrease the effectiveness of acetaminophen in sulfate-deficient people by increasing its clearance.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Despite initial concerns, it is unlikely that glucosamine will interfere with the effects of antidiabetes drugs.
In vitro and animal research has suggested that glucosamine might increase insulin resistance or decrease insulin production. This has raised concerns that taking glucosamine might worsen diabetes and decrease the effectiveness of diabetes drugs. However, clinical research suggests that glucosamine does not have adverse effects on blood glucose or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) in healthy, obese, or type 2 diabetes patients.
Inulin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, inulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that inulin improves glycemic control in patients with diabetes; however, it is unclear if it has hypoglycemic effects.
L-Glutamine
Anticonvulsants
Theoretically, glutamine might antagonize the effects of anticonvulsant medications.
Glutamine is metabolized to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate might have antagonistic effects with anticonvulsant drugs. However, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans.
