German chamomile is generally well tolerated by most adults. The main safety concern is allergic reactions, especially in people sensitive to ragweed or related plants—reactions can range from mild (sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose) to severe (anaphylaxis).

When applied to skin, it may cause allergic dermatitis or eczema. Used as a mouth rinse, it has caused nausea and mouth burning in some people.

Theoretically, German chamomile might have additive effects when used with CNS depressants.
German chamomile has mild sedative effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with drugs with sedative properties can cause additive effects and side effects.
