What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: guar gum at 450 mg per capsule. Guar gum is a soluble fiber derived from guar beans.
The capsule also contains gelatin and water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Guar gum is possibly effective for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and constipation, based on the evidence we have on file. That means the research shows some promise, but it's not definitive — more study is needed to be certain.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Guar gum is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but you need to take it with plenty of water. Without enough fluid, it can cause serious blockage in your food pipe or small intestine — so don't skip the water.
Most people experience mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or heartburn, especially at first. These usually ease up if you start with a small dose and gradually increase it.
Rare cases of severe obstruction have been reported when guar gum was taken with inadequate fluid. For pregnancy, the safety data on supplement-strength doses is limited, so it's best to ask your doctor before using it.
We don't have adequate safety data on lactation. Occupational exposure to guar gum dust may trigger asthma in workers.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any oral medications — especially metformin (diabetes), penicillin or other antibiotics, birth control pills containing ethinyl estradiol, or digoxin (heart medication). Guar gum can slow or reduce how much of these drugs your body absorbs, potentially making them less effective.
Spacing doses 30 to 60 minutes apart may help, but you'll want to confirm the exact timing and whether it's safe for you with your own provider.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Guar Gum 450 mg may help with high blood pressure, cholesterol, IBS, or constipation, but it can interfere with how your body absorbs many oral medications—especially metformin, penicillin, and birth control pills. If you take any prescription or over-the-counter medications by mouth, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.
Timing your doses 30 to 60 minutes apart can help, but that's a conversation to have with your own healthcare provider first.

Guar Gum 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Guar Gum 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection can interact with medications.
The main concern is that guar gum may reduce how well your body absorbs oral drugs (taking them by mouth), potentially making them less effective. The most serious documented interactions are Moderate-severity effects on oral medications in general, metformin (a diabetes drug), penicillin (an antibiotic), and the birth control ingredient ethinyl estradiol — all of which show reduced absorption when taken with guar gum.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Guar gum also has a Minor interaction with digoxin (a heart medication), though in this case it appears to slow absorption without changing how much your body takes in overall.
The good news is timing matters: if you take guar gum 30 to 60 minutes after your oral medications, you can avoid these absorption problems. Altogether, these interactions span 2,026 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Guar Gum 450 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Guar Gum
Ethinyl Estradiol
Theoretically, guar gum might reduce the absorption of ethinyl estradiol, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Animal research shows that taking guar gum with ethinyl estradiol decreases ethinyl estradiol absorption. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
Metformin (Glucophage)
Guar gum might reduce the absorption of metformin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
A small study in healthy volunteers shows that guar gum reduces the absorption rate of metformin.
Oral Drugs
Guar gum might reduce the absorption of some oral drugs, potentially decreasing their effectiveness.
Clinical research shows that guar gum reduces or slows absorption of medications such as penicillin and metformin. To avoid changes in absorption, take guar gum 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Penicillin
Guar gum might reduce the absorption of penicillin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking guar gum with penicillin results in decreased penicillin absorption and reduced penicillin levels.
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Guar gum might slow digoxin absorption, but it does not seem to impact how much digoxin is absorbed overall.
Two small studies in healthy volunteers show no change in the overall extent of digoxin absorption, although early absorption was slowed, when taken with guar gum.
