ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Abemaciclib
Abemaciclib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Guar Gum interacts with.
Clinical research shows that guar gum reduces or slows absorption of medications such as penicillin and metformin. To avoid changes in absorption, take guar gum 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you swallow a concentrated supplement dose it can grab onto pills in your stomach and slow or lessen how much gets absorbed. With Verzenio (abemaciclib), the worry is the opposite of a buildup. If the fiber blocks some of your dose from being absorbed, you may end up with less of this cancer medicine in your body than your doctor intended, which could make it work less well over time. Abemaciclib is an active drug (not a prodrug), so this is about getting your full dose, not about extra side effects.
This is mostly a timing issue. A good habit is to take your abemaciclib first and wait 30 to 60 minutes before any guar gum supplement. Food-level amounts are unlikely to matter much. Please run this by your oncology team or pharmacist before changing anything.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Abemaciclib page
“A daily pill for a common form of advanced breast cancer, abemaciclib (Verzenio) only helps when its blood level stays steady, so this list of 138 supplements deserves genuine care. Nearly all of them act on CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears abemaciclib, meaning a supplement can push its level up and intensify side effects, or drag…”

About Guar Gum
What is Guar Gum?
- Constipation and bowel regularity
- Diarrhea (as a stool bulking agent)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Blood sugar control
- Feeling full for weight management
Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
About Abemaciclib
What Is Abemaciclib Used For?
Brand name: Verzenio
Verzenio (abemaciclib) is used to treat HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer in adults. For early breast cancer at high risk of recurrence, Verzenio is taken alongside endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor) after surgery to help prevent the cancer from coming back.
For advanced or metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread), Verzenio can be used in combination with an aromatase inhibitor as a first hormonal treatment, in combination with fulvestrant after the cancer has progressed on endocrine therapy, or alone after prior endocrine therapy and chemotherapy have stopped working.
