ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Articaine, Epinephrine
Articaine, Epinephrine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Guar Gum interacts with.
Clinical research shows that guar gum reduces or slows absorption of medications such as penicillin and metformin. To avoid changes in absorption, take guar gum 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's a bit of good news: this particular interaction probably doesn't apply to Septocaine (articaine with epinephrine) in real life. The concern with guar gum is that its thick, gel-like fiber can grab onto pills swallowed by mouth and slow their absorption from the gut. But articaine and epinephrine aren't taken as a pill. Your dentist injects them right into the tissue around a tooth to numb the area, so there's no trip through the stomach for guar gum to interfere with.
Because the medicine bypasses your digestive tract entirely, guar gum shouldn't change how well it numbs you or how it works. If you regularly take guar gum, it's still smart to mention it to your dentist or pharmacist, but I wouldn't expect a problem here.

About Guar Gum
What is Guar Gum?
- Constipation and bowel regularity
- Diarrhea (as a stool bulking agent)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Blood sugar control
- Feeling full for weight management
Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
