When taken by mouth, Tinospora cordifolia is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects reported are headache and nasal pain.

However, there's an important caution: liver injury has been reported, including cases of autoimmune hepatitis, acute hepatitis, worsening of existing liver disease, and acute liver failure in 49 patients across case reports. Some required liver transplants, and several died.

These cases occurred after taking the supplement for 42–90 days on average, either alone or combined with other ingredients. Because of this risk, use it only under medical guidance and with careful monitoring.

The supplement is not recommended in pregnancy — safety data advise against it. While breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable safety information, so it's best avoided.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research in adults with type 2 diabetes shows that Tinospora cordifolia can reduce fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin. Additionally, animal research shows that Tinospora cordifolia has hypoglycemic effects.
