HelloPharmacist Scorecard of HA Hyaluronic Acid Formula by California Natural
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This formula has 3 active ingredients. Hyaluronic acid is a compound your body makes naturally; it's used in supplements for dry eye and wound healing.
Chondroitin sulfate is extracted from cartilage and is often paired with glucosamine for joint health. Biocell Collagen Type II is a collagen source, though we hold no interaction or safety data for it.
The capsule also contains rice powder, magnesium stearate, gelatin, and water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Hyaluronic acid is possibly effective for dry eye and venous leg ulcers (wounds on the lower leg that won't heal). For aging skin, hay fever, and sexual dysfunction, the evidence isn't established.
Chondroitin sulfate is possibly effective for cataracts and osteoarthritis; for aging skin, bone loss, high cholesterol, and colorectal adenoma, evidence is insufficient. We have no effectiveness data on file for Biocell Collagen Type II.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Hyaluronic acid taken by mouth appears to be well tolerated overall, though long-term safety of oral supplements isn't fully studied. The facts advise caution and note limited safety information for oral use.
Chondroitin sulfate is generally well tolerated for short-term use but may cause abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, or nausea. Rare serious effects include liver damage.
Skin symptoms like swelling, hair loss, and rash have also been reported, and a case of asthma worsening occurred with a chondroitin-glucosamine combination. Safety data during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not enough for both hyaluronic acid and chondroitin; talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner, double-check this product with your doctor or pharmacist before starting; chondroitin sulfate may increase its blood-thinning effect. We couldn't check Biocell Collagen Type II, so run your full medication list through the tool on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with dry eye or osteoarthritis if the ingredients prove effective for you, but the evidence is mixed. If you take warfarin or any blood thinner, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—chondroitin sulfate can increase bleeding risk.
Pregnant or nursing—discuss it first with your healthcare provider.

Chrondroitin Sulfate
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Taking chondroitin in combination with glucosamine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, the effect of chondroitin alone is unclear.
There have been multiple reports of increased international normalized ratio (INR) in patients taking warfarin with glucosamine, with or without chondroitin. The lack of reports with chondroitin alone seem to suggest that the interactions occurring in these reports may have been due to glucosamine. In two individual case reports, glucosamine/chondroitin combinations were associated with a significant increase in INR in patients previously stabilized on warfarin. Additionally, 20 voluntary case reports to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) have linked glucosamine plus chondroitin with increased INR, bruising, and bleeding in patients who were also taking warfarin. There have also been 20 additional case reports to the World Health Organization (WHO) that link glucosamine alone, without chondroitin, to increased INR in patients taking warfarin.
