These probiotics have been studied for several digestive and immune conditions. Both Lactobacillus acidophilus strains and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis are rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and both L. acidophilus strains also show possibly effective evidence for Helicobacter pylori and bacterial vaginosis.
B. lactis is additionally rated possibly effective for respiratory tract infections and constipation. L. acidophilus is rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease, and evidence is insufficient to rate it for acute respiratory distress syndrome.
We hold no effectiveness data for Lactobacillus paracasei.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. In clinical trials, gastrointestinal side effects like abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea were reported in a small number of participants, though these events are uncommon.
Rare cases of rash and itching have been noted in trial data, though it's unclear whether they were due to L. acidophilus, B. lactis, the combination, or individual sensitivity. Since these contain live organisms, there is a theoretical concern of infection in some patients, though most documented cases appear linked to bacteria translocation from other body sites.

Suggested/Recommended/Usage/Directions
Recommended intake: Children (1-4 years): added one level scoop (100 mg) of HLC neonate powder into a single daily feeding of expressed breast or formula milk or as professionally directed.
Take at least 2-3 hours before or after taking antibiotics.

Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL-21)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (CUL-62)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium lactis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. lactis.
Since B. lactis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. lactis preparations by at least 2 hours.
