Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Indole-3-carbinol product and its label doesn't state a use — see Indole-3-carbinol's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for indole-3-carbinol's effectiveness isn't established in our data. The product is studied for breast cancer, colorectal cancer, cervical dysplasia, liver disease, and fibromyalgia, but we hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for any of these uses.

If you're considering this for a specific health goal, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current research actually supports.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Indole-3-carbinol appears well tolerated overall, though the supplement doses used here are less studied than the amounts you'd get from food. The most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, rash, and tremor.

Some people have reported unsteadiness and imbalance, especially at higher doses — one person taking 400 mg twice daily developed these symptoms after 10 days, and two children who accidentally took three times the intended dose in one day became unsteady and nauseated. Because of possible hormone effects and limited safety data, concentrated supplements are not recommended during pregnancy.

Safety data for breastfeeding is not established either, so the supplement is not recommended while nursing. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this is right for you if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
