CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Pyrilamine

Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Pyrilamine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Indole-3-carbinol interacts with.

Theoretically, indole-3-carbinol might increase the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates and lower serum concentrations.

Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

In this product (Midol Max Strength), the ingredient most affected here is the caffeine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear caffeine out of your system. Indole-3-carbinol may speed that enzyme up, which would help your body break caffeine down a little faster. In plain terms, the pep from the caffeine might not last quite as long, and you may notice less of its effect.

The good news: this is only a theoretical concern based on animal and lab studies, not real-world human reports, so for most people it is unlikely to cause a problem. The acetaminophen and pyrilamine pieces aren't really the issue here. If you take I3C regularly and rely on this for menstrual relief, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.
