Indole-3-carbinol and Minocycline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Minocycline

Minocycline falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Indole-3-carbinol interacts with.

Theoretically, indole-3-carbinol might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that indole-3-carbinol inhibits platelet aggregation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest version: the interaction on file pairs indole-3-carbinol (I3C) with blood thinners, where lab studies suggest I3C may make platelets a little less sticky and could add to bleeding risk. Minocycline isn't a blood thinner, though. It's a tetracycline antibiotic used for acne and various infections, so this particular bleeding concern doesn't really apply to it directly.

That said, this is theoretical and based only on test-tube research, so even for true blood thinners it's a soft signal, not a strong one. The amount of I3C you get from eating broccoli or cabbage is very unlikely to matter. If you're considering a concentrated I3C supplement alongside minocycline, just run it past your pharmacist or doctor first to be safe.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Minocycline page

“This is one of the longer interaction lists I review, and with minocycline it earns real care rather than a shrug. Most entries pair this tetracycline antibiotic, taken for acne and other infections, with supplements that raise bleeding risk, and a second sizable group, beer and wine included, can add strain on the liver.”

  • Estrogen and hormone balance support
  • Breast and cervical health
  • Prostate health
  • Antioxidant and 'detox' support
  • General cancer-prevention interest

Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is a compound formed when you eat cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage, and it is sold as a supplement mainly for hormone-related and cell-protective effects. Most human evidence is preliminary or comes from lab and animal studies, so it should not be relied on to prevent or treat any disease. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
