Anagrelide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Indole-3-carbinol interacts with.

Theoretically, indole-3-carbinol might increase the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates and lower serum concentrations.

Here's the gist for anagrelide (Agrylin): your liver leans on an enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear it. Indole-3-carbinol, the compound from broccoli and cabbage, may speed that enzyme up. If anagrelide gets cleared faster, blood levels could dip, and the medicine might not hold your platelet count down as well as it should.

That said, this concern comes only from lab and animal studies, so it's theoretical for now, and food-sized servings of veggies are unlikely to be the problem. Concentrated I3C supplements are the real question mark. Since anagrelide is keeping a specific blood disorder in check, don't change anything on your own. Just run the supplement by your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep up with your platelet checks.

Here's the gist with anagrelide (Agrylin). This medicine already lowers your platelets, the cells that help your blood clot. In lab dish studies, indole-3-carbinol (I3C) also seems to keep platelets from clumping together. So in theory, stacking the two could nudge you toward easier bruising or bleeding, things like nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that take longer to stop.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. And the small amounts of I3C you get from eating broccoli or cabbage are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question. Before adding an I3C supplement, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Anagrelide Used For?

Brand name: Agrylin

Anagrelide — sold as Agrylin and as generic anagrelide capsules — is used to treat thrombocythemia secondary to myeloproliferative neoplasms. That means it's prescribed when a bone marrow disorder causes the body to produce too many platelets, raising the risk of dangerous blood clots.

By bringing platelet counts down to a safer range, anagrelide also helps reduce related symptoms, including bleeding and clotting events (thrombo-hemorrhagic events).
