Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the basic idea with abciximab (ReoPro). This is a powerful IV antiplatelet medicine given in a hospital setting, usually during procedures like a cardiac stent placement, to keep your platelets from clumping and forming clots. Indole-3-carbinol is interesting because lab studies suggest it may also slow platelet clumping on its own.

So in theory, stacking the two could add up and raise your bleeding risk, meaning more bruising, oozing, or harder-to-stop bleeding. I want to be honest though: this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from real people, so it's theoretical. Practically, abciximab is carefully managed by your hospital team, and they'll want to know about every supplement you take. Bring it up with your doctor or pharmacist before using I3C.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Abciximab page

“Because abciximab (ReoPro) exists to stop platelets from clotting during heart procedures like angioplasty, nearly all of the 218 supplements on this list pull in one direction. Some 202 have antiplatelet or blood-thinning activity of their own, and adding that on top of abciximab can raise bleeding risk.”

Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is a compound formed when you eat cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage, and it is sold as a supplement mainly for hormone-related and cell-protective effects. Most human evidence is preliminary or comes from lab and animal studies, so it should not be relied on to prevent or treat any disease. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
