What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: L-tyrosine and iodine. L-tyrosine is an amino acid that serves as a building block for brain chemicals and thyroid hormones.
Iodine is a mineral essential for thyroid function and hormone production. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients—hypromellose (a plant-based capsule material) and silicon dioxide (an anti-caking agent).
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-tyrosine is effective for phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare genetic condition, and possibly effective for cognitive function and memory. Evidence is insufficient to rate it for alcohol use disorder or dementia, and it appears to be ineffective for athletic performance.
Iodine is likely effective for preventing radiation-exposure thyroid damage and correcting iodine deficiency, and possibly effective for oral mouth sores (mucositis) and gum disease (periodontitis).
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tyrosine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults but warrants a conversation with your doctor before regular use, since safety data are limited. The most common side effects in trials were fatigue, headache, heartburn, and nausea; larger doses can worsen headache and fatigue.
Iodine is safe at normal dietary amounts but can cause thyroid problems at high doses. In pregnancy, adequate iodine is important, but high-dose products should be avoided—use only what your doctor advises.
During breastfeeding, some iodine passes into milk; follow medical guidance to avoid excess. L-tyrosine has no formal pregnancy or breastfeeding rating in our data, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about its use during these times.
Iodine can rarely trigger severe allergic reactions in susceptible people.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications if you take levodopa (Parkinson's disease), thyroid hormones, antithyroid drugs, lithium (bipolar disorder), or amiodarone (heart rhythm). These moderate-severity interactions may reduce how well some drugs work or add to thyroid effects.
Your doctor or pharmacist can help you time doses or adjust as needed.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is worth considering if you have an iodine deficiency or PKU (for the tyrosine component) and your doctor agrees. If you take levodopa, thyroid medication, lithium, antithyroid drugs, or amiodarone, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first—the interactions here are real and may affect how your medications work.
Have the conversation before you start.

Iodine & Tyrosine by Thorne Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Iodine & Tyrosine by Thorne has documented interactions with several medication types, primarily through its iodine and L-tyrosine content.
The most serious concern is a moderate-severity interaction between iodine and lithium, which may have additive effects on thyroid function and requires monitoring of thyroid levels during concurrent use.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-tyrosine can interfere with levodopa (a Parkinson's medication) by competing for absorption, potentially reducing levodopa's effectiveness; separating doses by at least 2 hours may help. Tyrosine also theoretically has additive effects with thyroid hormone medications, since tyrosine is a precursor to thyroid hormones.
Iodine carries additional moderate-severity interactions with antithyroid drugs—high-dose iodine can shift thyroid function either way and may alter how antithyroid medications work—and with amiodarone (a heart rhythm medication), which itself contains substantial iodine; combining them risks excessive iodine levels and thyroid damage. Altogether, these interactions span 28 individual medications.
Before starting this product, check your exact medications with the tool on this page, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any of these drug types.

For each ingredient in Iodine & Tyrosine with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Tyrosine
Levodopa
Theoretically, tyrosine might decrease the effectiveness of levodopa.
Tyrosine and levodopa compete for absorption in the proximal duodenum by the large neutral amino acid (LNAA) transport system. Advise patients to separate doses of tyrosine and levodopa by at least 2 hours.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, tyrosine might have additive effects with thyroid hormone medications.
Tyrosine is a precursor to thyroxine and might increase levels of thyroid hormones.
Iodine
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Combining iodine with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Iodine might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Lithium
Combining iodine with lithium might have additive hypothyroid effects.
Lithium can inhibit thyroid function. Several case reports suggest that concomitant use of lithium and potassium iodide can reduce thyroid function in otherwise healthy adults. Monitor thyroid function.
