HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Kalium Iodine by Amvilab
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Kalium Iodine contains two active ingredients: iodine and potassium. Iodine supports thyroid health and is used to prevent or treat iodine deficiency; it's also used after radiation exposure and has been studied for mouth sores and gum disease.
Potassium is an electrolyte your body needs for nerve and muscle function, and it's often taken as a supplement to prevent or correct low blood potassium levels. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — fillers and binders like dicalcium phosphate, stearic acid, and magnesium stearate — that help hold it together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Iodine is likely effective for preventing and treating iodine deficiency and for protecting the thyroid after radiation exposure. It's possibly effective for oral mucositis (mouth sores) and periodontitis (gum disease), but the evidence is less established.
No effectiveness rating is on file for potassium supplements.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Iodine is well tolerated when taken at normal dietary levels, but high doses can trigger thyroid problems — including hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism — and rare allergic reactions. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headache, and a metallic taste; long-term high doses can cause acneform skin lesions.
Potassium is generally well tolerated from food, but supplements can dangerously raise blood potassium levels, especially in people with kidney disease. Common side effects are abdominal discomfort, belching, and diarrhea; high levels can cause heart rhythm problems and confusion.
Iodine and potassium are both considered likely safe in pregnancy when used at appropriate medical doses, though iodine's safety in pregnancy carries a possibly unsafe rating as well—talk to your doctor about the right amount for you. For breastfeeding, dietary potassium is fine, but excess iodine can pass into breast milk, so follow medical guidance.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking Kalium Iodine if you're on lithium, antithyroid drugs, amiodarone, potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills that save potassium), ACE inhibitors, or ARBs. These combinations raise the risk of thyroid problems or dangerously high potassium levels and often need monitoring.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Kalium Iodine may help if you're iodine deficient or need thyroid support, but it's not for everyone — especially if you take lithium, heart rhythm drugs, or blood pressure medications. Before you start, check your exact medications with your own doctor or pharmacist to confirm it's safe for you.

Kalium Iodine by Amvilab Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Kalium Iodine by Amvilab contains iodine and potassium, and both have documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is iodine's Moderate interaction with lithium — combining them may worsen thyroid suppression, and you'll need your thyroid function monitored if you take both.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Iodine also has Moderate interactions with antithyroid drugs (which manage overactive thyroid) and with amiodarone, a heart rhythm medication. High-dose iodine can push your thyroid in either direction — too high or too low — and amiodarone itself is already very high in iodine, so adding more increases the risk of thyroid damage.
Potassium poses a separate Moderate concern: it can raise your blood potassium to unsafe levels when combined with potassium-sparing water pills (diuretics), ACE inhibitors (blood pressure drugs), or ARBs (blood pressure drugs). This risk is highest if you have kidney disease or take high doses.
Alternate read: Altogether, these interactions span 69 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of yours are listed.

For each ingredient in Kalium Iodine with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Potassium
Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)
Using ACEIs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ACEIs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.
Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (Arbs)
Using ARBs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ARBs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Concomitant use increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Using potassium-sparing diuretics with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Iodine
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Combining iodine with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Iodine might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Lithium
Combining iodine with lithium might have additive hypothyroid effects.
Lithium can inhibit thyroid function. Several case reports suggest that concomitant use of lithium and potassium iodide can reduce thyroid function in otherwise healthy adults. Monitor thyroid function.
