Artichoke leaf extract is possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) and indigestion; small clinical studies suggest it may modestly lower cholesterol and fasting blood sugar when taken for 8–12 weeks. Adenosine triphosphate in oral supplement form is not well studied — the research on it focuses on its prescription injectable form, which is effective for certain heart rhythm problems and heart imaging tests, but the oral supplement version has not been thoroughly evaluated.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Most of these ingredients are generally well tolerated when used as foods or short-term supplements. Betaine hydrochloride may irritate the stomach and should be avoided if you have ulcers, gastritis, or true acid reflux — it can cause heartburn.
Dandelion is well tolerated orally but may cause diarrhea, heartburn, or stomach upset; in rare cases, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis have occurred, especially in people sensitive to plants in the ragweed family (Asteraceae). Artichoke likewise is well tolerated but can cause diarrhea, bloating, and stomach pain; people sensitive to ragweed or related plants may have allergic reactions.
Lipase enzymes have no reported adverse effects in adults, though safety data is limited. Adenosine's safety as an oral supplement is not well established — the injectable prescription form carries significant cardiovascular risks, but oral safety data are sparse.
During pregnancy, betaine hydrochloride, dandelion, and artichoke all have insufficient safety data — the product labeling advises against them in pregnancy. Safety data during breastfeeding are similarly insufficient for all ingredients.

Dandelion root poses moderate interactions with several drug types. It may theoretically inhibit liver enzymes (CYP1A2) and slow the clearance of certain medications, increase potassium levels dangerously when combined with potassium-sparing diuretics, raise bleeding risk with blood thinners (anticoagulants/antiplatelet drugs), lower blood sugar excessively with diabetes medications, and reduce the absorption of fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
It may also interact with lithium by reducing its excretion and increasing its blood levels.
Betaine hydrochloride lowers stomach acid, which means it could theoretically reduce the effectiveness of antacids, H2-blockers (stomach acid reducers), and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) — all minor interactions. Artichoke leaf extract poses moderate interactions with blood pressure medications, drugs metabolized by CYP2C19 and CYP2B6 liver enzymes, and diabetes medications.
Adenosine triphosphate also carries a moderate interaction with carbamazepine (Tegretol), an anti-seizure medication, due to the risk of heart rhythm problems. Methylxanthines (caffeine, theophylline, aminophylline) may block adenosine's effects.

Dandelion root extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking dandelion root along with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that dandelion root inhibits platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion extract may have moderate alpha-glucosidase inhibitor activity and might also increase insulin secretion. Also, in a case report, a 58-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes who was being treated with insulin developed hypoglycemia 2 weeks after beginning to eat salads containing dandelion.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, dandelion might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion might inhibit CYP1A2. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, until more is known, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 in patients taking dandelion.
Glucuronidated Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the clearance of drugs that are UDP-glucuronosyltransferase substrates.
There is some preliminary evidence that dandelion might induce UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, a phase II enzyme.
Lithium
Theoretically, through diuretic effects, dandelion might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that dandelion has diuretic properties. As diuretics can increase serum lithium levels, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when taken with dandelion.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics.
Dandelion contains significant amounts of potassium.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Theoretically, dandelion might lower fluoroquinolone levels.
Animal research shows that dandelion reduces absorption of ciprofloxacin and can lower levels by 73%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
Globe Artichoke Leaf Extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, artichoke leaf extract may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
A meta-analysis of small clinical studies shows that taking artichoke leaf extract for 8-12 weeks can modestly reduce fasting plasma glucose when compared with placebo.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, artichoke leaf extract may increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
A meta-analysis of small clinical studies in patients with hypertension shows that taking artichoke can reduce systolic blood pressure by around 3 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by around 2 mmHg when compared with placebo.
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, artichoke might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that artichoke leaf extract inhibits CYP2B6 activity. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, artichoke might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that artichoke leaf extract inhibits CYP2C19 activity. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Adenosine Triphosphate
Dipyridamole (Persantine)
Dipyridamole can increase the therapeutic and toxic effects of adenosine.
Dipyridamole decreases the metabolism of adenosine. Intravenous infusion of adenosine in patients who are taking dipyridamole can cause dizziness, bradycardia, and syncope. Dipyridamole should be discontinued for several days prior to a cardiac stress test using adenosine.
Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
Carbamazepine might increase the risk of heart block when used concomitantly with adenosine.
Carbamazepine and adenosine can both cause heart block. Giving them concurrently might produce an additive effect.
Methylxanthines
Methylxanthines are competitive antagonists of adenosine and can block its pharmacologic effects.
The methylxanthines, aminophylline, caffeine, and theophylline, can block the effects of adenosine by acting as competitive antagonists at adenosine cell surface receptors. It is recommended that methylxanthines be avoided for 24 hours prior to cardiac stress tests.
Betaine Hydrochloride
Antacids
Betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity and could decrease the effects of antacids.
In human research, betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity. Antacids are taken to decrease stomach acidity. Theoretically, taking betaine hydrochloride along with antacids might decrease the effects of the antacids.
H2-Blockers
Betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity and could decrease the effects of H2-blockers.
In human research, betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity. H2-blockers are used to decrease stomach acidity. Theoretically, taking betaine hydrochloride along with H2-blockers might decrease the effects of H2-blockers.
Proton Pump Inhibitors (Ppis)
Betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity and could decrease the effects of PPIs.
In human research, betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity. PPIs are used to decrease stomach acidity. Theoretically, taking betaine hydrochloride along with PPIs might decrease the effects of PPIs
