HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Carnitine 250 mg by Source Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: L-carnitine, an amino acid that your body naturally produces and uses to help move fatty acids into cells for energy. The capsule itself also contains gelatin, dibasic calcium phosphate, silica, and magnesium stearate as inactive ingredients (the binders and fillers that hold the capsule together).
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-carnitine is effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency. It's possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), congestive heart failure, and angina, though the evidence for these uses isn't as strong.
If you're considering it for one of those conditions, talk with your doctor about whether the research supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. Common side effects include stomach upset — abdominal cramps, pain, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, and reduced appetite — as well as a fish-like body odor that some people report.
High doses are more likely to cause these stomach issues. Seizures are rare but have been reported.
There isn't enough reliable safety data for this supplement, so it should be used only under medical supervision.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take a blood thinner (anticoagulant) such as warfarin or acenocoumarol, check with your doctor before using this supplement — L-carnitine may strengthen their blood-thinning effects. Also check if you're on thyroid hormone replacement; L-carnitine might reduce how well it works.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-carnitine may be worth considering if you have a confirmed carnitine deficiency or want to explore it for heart-related conditions under your doctor's guidance. If you take a blood thinner like warfarin or a thyroid hormone, you need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this — it could interfere with how those medications work.
The same goes for any other prescription you're on: run it through the interaction checker on this page first.

L-Carnitine 250 mg by Source Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Carnitine 250 mg by Source Naturals interacts with blood thinners and thyroid hormones.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners (anticoagulants) like warfarin and acenocoumarol — L-carnitine may increase their anticoagulant effects, which means your blood could thin more than intended and raise your bleeding risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-carnitine also appears to work against thyroid hormone replacement therapy. It may block thyroid hormone from entering your cells properly, potentially lowering how well your thyroid medication works if you take it for hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid).
Altogether, these interactions span 19 individual medications. Use the medication checker below to see if any of your prescriptions fall into these categories — blood thinners or thyroid hormones — before you start this supplement.

For each ingredient in L-Carnitine 250 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Carnitine
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.
