What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-carnitine, an amino acid your body naturally makes and uses to convert fat into energy. It's the only active in the bottle.
The rest — purified water, citric acid, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, natural and artificial flavors, and sucralose — are inactive ingredients that give the liquid its taste, texture, and shelf life.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-carnitine is effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency, a medical condition your doctor would diagnose. Beyond that, the evidence is less certain.
It's rated possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), congestive heart failure, and angina, meaning some research suggests a benefit but we don't have rock-solid proof yet. If you're taking it for one of those reasons, talk with your doctor about whether the current evidence makes sense for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, though high doses can cause stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, and an unpleasant fishy body odor. These side effects are common but usually mild.
Rarely, seizures have been reported. There isn't enough reliable safety data on L-carnitine to recommend it for pregnancy without medical supervision — talk with your doctor if you're pregnant or planning to be.
It's rated possibly safe while breastfeeding, but safety data is limited, so caution is advised.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take any blood thinner — especially acenocoumarol or warfarin — L-carnitine may increase its strength, which could raise your bleeding risk. Also double-check if you're on thyroid hormone replacement, since L-carnitine may make it less effective.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product to your routine.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-carnitine can help if you have a documented deficiency, and some evidence supports its use for heart and cholesterol issues — but that's a conversation to have with your doctor. The main thing to watch is if you take blood thinners like warfarin or acenocoumarol, or thyroid replacement therapy.
Check your exact medications with the tool on this page before starting, and run it by your doctor or pharmacist first.

L-Carnitine 3000 Passion Fruit by 1 Up Nutrition Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
1 Up Nutrition's L-Carnitine 3000 in Passion Fruit does interact with blood thinners and thyroid medication through its single active ingredient, L-carnitine.
The most serious concern is with acenocoumarol (Sintrom), a blood thinner similar to warfarin — L-carnitine may increase how strongly it works, and there are at least two case reports of people on both experiencing a dangerous rise in their clotting time (INR elevation). This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-carnitine may also enhance the effects of warfarin (Coumadin), another common blood thinner, though there's less direct evidence for this combination. Taking L-carnitine alongside thyroid hormone replacement therapy may reduce how well the thyroid medication works, since L-carnitine appears to block thyroid hormone from entering your cells properly.
Altogether, these interactions span 19 individual medications. If you take any blood thinner or thyroid hormone supplement, run the specific medication through the checker on this page before you start, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.

L-Carnitine
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.
