What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-carnitine, a compound your body normally makes and uses to turn fat into energy. It's especially important if your body doesn't produce enough on its own.
There are no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-carnitine is effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency — the condition it's designed for. For high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), congestive heart failure, and angina, the evidence is promising but not yet conclusive — we'd call that possibly effective.
The research suggests it may help, but we don't have enough solid proof to say it will work for everyone.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Carnitine is generally well tolerated at normal doses, though some people report stomach upset, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, or a fishy body odor — especially at higher doses. Rarely, seizures have been reported.
There isn't enough reliable safety data for unsupervised use, so talk with your doctor before starting, especially at high doses. While breastfeeding, safety hasn't been well studied; the data suggests it's possibly safe, but you should discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you use blood thinners (warfarin, acenocoumarol, or others) — L-carnitine may increase their strength and your bleeding risk. Also mention it if you take thyroid hormone replacement, since L-carnitine might reduce how well it works.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Carnitine works well if your body isn't making enough of it. If you take blood thinners or thyroid medication, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first — this supplement can change how those drugs work.
It's generally easy on the stomach at typical doses, but high amounts may cause digestive upset. Talk it over with your healthcare provider before you start.

L-Carnitine
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.
