What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Carnitine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Hard Rhino L-Carnitine is a single-ingredient powder containing L-carnitine, an amino acid your body uses to move fats into cells for energy. There are no other active ingredients.
The product contains no inactive fillers or binders.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-carnitine is effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency. It's rated possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), congestive heart failure, and angina.
For these conditions, the evidence suggests it may help, but more research would strengthen the case.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. High doses can cause stomach upset—including nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal pain, and cramps—and a fishy body odor.
Rarely, seizures have been reported. Safety data during breastfeeding is limited, so caution is advised if you're nursing.
Pregnancy safety data isn't on file for this ingredient, so discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or planning to be.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you're on blood thinners like warfarin or acenocoumarol—L-carnitine may boost their effect. Also confirm with them if you take thyroid hormone replacement, since L-carnitine may reduce how well it works.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Carnitine works well if you have a documented carnitine deficiency, and it may help with heart conditions or high cholesterol. If you take blood thinners or thyroid medication, you'll need to clear this with your doctor first—the interactions are real.
Talk it over with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have any medications on board.

L-Carnitine by Hard Rhino Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hard Rhino L-Carnitine can interact with blood thinners and thyroid hormones.
The main concern is with warfarin (Coumadin) and acenocoumarol (Sintrom)—L-carnitine may increase how strongly these blood thinners work, which raises your bleeding risk. There are at least two case reports of people on acenocoumarol who had their blood-thinning effect jump higher when they added L-carnitine.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-carnitine may also weaken thyroid hormone replacement therapy. It appears to block thyroid hormone from entering your cells properly, so your thyroid medication might not work as well as intended.
Altogether, these interactions span 19 individual medications.
If you take any blood thinner or thyroid medication, check your exact drugs with the search tool below before starting L-Carnitine, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first.

For each ingredient in L-Carnitine with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Carnitine
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.
