Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: L-carnitine tartrate, a form of L-carnitine, an amino acid your body uses to move fatty acids into cells so they can be burned for energy. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients — rice flour, gelatin, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide — which help form and preserve the tablet.

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: fat burning, energy, performance, and recovery.
  • We looked for evidence on: Athletic performance, Exercise-induced muscle damage, Exercise-induced muscle soreness, L-carnitine deficiency, endurance, workout recovery — and 1 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: L-carnitine is rated "Effective" for L-carnitine deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: L-carnitine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Athletic performance, Exercise-induced muscle soreness, Exercise-induced muscle damage.

L-carnitine is effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency, a rare condition where your body can't make or absorb enough of this amino acid. It's rated possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), heart failure (congestive heart failure), and chest pain from reduced blood flow to the heart (angina), meaning the evidence suggests it may help, but isn't conclusive enough to call it proven.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at normal doses, though some people report stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, and a fishy body odor, especially at higher doses. Seizures are rare but have been reported.

There isn't enough reliable safety data for use during pregnancy — talk with your doctor about whether to take it if you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It's rated possibly safe while breastfeeding, but safety isn't well studied, so caution is advised; check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're nursing.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — L-carnitine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 19 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners like warfarin or acenocoumarol — L-carnitine may boost their blood-thinning effect and raise your bleeding risk. Also flag it if you're on thyroid hormone replacement, because L-carnitine may reduce how well your thyroid medication works.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

L-carnitine works best if you have a confirmed deficiency, and shows promise for heart and cholesterol issues, but the evidence isn't solid yet. If you take blood thinners or thyroid hormone, you'll need to clear this with your doctor first because of documented interactions.

L-Carnitine Tartrate3 drug types · 19 drugs

Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)

Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Thyroid Hormone

Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

Likelihood Probable Evidence B
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.

L-Carnitine500 by Evlution Nutrition: Common Questions

Does L-Carnitine500 by Evlution Nutrition interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, L-Carnitine500 has a known interaction with 19 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
L-Carnitine500 contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does L-carnitine actually help you lose weight or burn fat?
The facts we have don't address weight loss or fat burning. L-carnitine does help move fatty acids into cells for energy, but whether that translates to weight loss in healthy people isn't covered in this product's data — that's a conversation for your doctor or a registered dietitian.
What's the fishy smell I've heard about?
A fish-like body odor is a documented side effect of L-carnitine, especially at higher doses. It comes from how your body processes and excretes the supplement. If it happens, it usually goes away when you stop taking it or lower your dose.
Is it safe to take while I'm pregnant?
There isn't enough reliable safety data to know either way. If you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk with your doctor before starting this supplement — they'll help you weigh the risks and benefits for your situation.
Can I take this if I have heart disease?
L-carnitine is rated possibly effective for heart failure and angina, so it may be worth considering — but only under your doctor's supervision. Some heart conditions come with medication (like blood thinners) that interact with L-carnitine, so you'll need medical guidance.
What stomach problems might I get?
The most common side effects are abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, and reduced appetite. These are more likely at high doses, and usually go away when you lower the dose or stop taking it.
