HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Lysine HCL by PureBulk.com
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: L-Lysine Hydrochloride, an amino acid (a building block your body uses to make protein). There are no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Lysine is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) — the evidence suggests it may help, though it's not definitive. For other uses listed in the research — child growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers — there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
At typical doses, lysine is generally well tolerated. High amounts may cause stomach upset, and we don't have good long-term safety data.
The most common side effects from oral use are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and indigestion. There is one rare case report of kidney inflammation linked to oral lysine, though this is not common.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, supplement safety hasn't been well studied — food sources of lysine are fine, but talk with your doctor before taking a supplement to decide what's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Check before starting if you take a 5-HT4 agonist — lysine may reduce how well it works. Talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist to see if this product is right for you alongside your current medications.
