by Bronson
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Theanine 200 mg against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Theanine 200 mg by Bronson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains two active ingredients. L-Theanine is an amino acid naturally found in tea that's used to promote calm and mental clarity.
Passionflower powder is a dried botanical traditionally used for anxiety and sleep support. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients: gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose (a filler), magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide to hold everything together and make it easy to swallow.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Theanine is rated possibly effective for cognitive function — there's some evidence it may help with focus and mental clarity. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, generalized anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, the evidence we hold isn't strong enough to rate.
Passionflower is rated possibly effective for both insomnia and pre-procedural anxiety — it's been studied for helping people sleep and calming nerves before medical procedures. For alcohol use disorder and benzodiazepine withdrawal, the evidence isn't established in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Theanine is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but long-term safety isn't well studied. The most common side effects are headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep, and vivid dreams.
Passionflower is also generally well tolerated short-term but commonly causes drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and sedation. Rare cases of allergic reactions and a case of severe nausea, vomiting, and heart rhythm changes have been reported, though the latter was very high dose.
For pregnancy, L-Theanine doesn't have enough safety data — it's best to avoid it. Passionflower is rated possibly unsafe in pregnancy due to lack of safety data and potential effects on the uterus, so it should be avoided.
Neither ingredient has enough safety information for breastfeeding, so both should be avoided while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood pressure medications, sedatives or sleep aids, antidepressants, or any drug metabolized by the liver (CYP3A4 substrates). Passionflower may also reduce absorption of certain medications transported by OATP proteins.
The sedative effects from both ingredients together could be stronger than either one alone.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Bronson's L-Theanine 200 mg is meant for people looking for calm and cognitive support, but it shouldn't be mixed with blood pressure drugs or sedatives without checking first. If you take any medications — especially for sleep, anxiety, depression, or blood pressure — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.
It's also not for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Take time to review your medication list against this product's interactions before you begin.

L-Theanine 200 mg by Bronson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bronson's L-Theanine 200 mg contains two active ingredients — L-theanine and passionflower powder — and both have documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is passionflower's moderate interaction with CNS depressants (sedative drugs): using them together can add up to cause too much drowsiness and other sedative side effects.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-Theanine carries moderate interaction risk with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives). It may lower blood pressure on its own, so combining it with drugs that already do this could push your pressure too low.
L-Theanine also has minor theoretical interactions with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants that work on serotonin), though no actual cases of serotonin syndrome have been reported. It may also add to the sedative effects of CNS depressants, though the clinical relevance isn't clear.
Passionflower carries additional minor interactions: it may reduce how well your body absorbs certain medications that rely on specific transport proteins (OATP substrates), and it may decrease the effects of drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4. Altogether, these interactions span 1,038 individual medications.
Before you start this product, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page — especially if you take blood pressure drugs, sedatives, sleep aids, or antidepressants.

For each ingredient in L-Theanine 200 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Passionflower, Powder
Cns Depressants
Concomitant use of passion flower with sedative drugs might cause additive effects and side effects.
Research in animals and humans shows that passion flower has sedative effects which can be additive when used with sedative medications like lorazepam.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.
Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide Substrates (Oatp)
Theoretically, passion flower might reduce the bioavailability of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the passion flower constituents apigenin and vitexin inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2. This inhibition may be dose-dependent. One specific high-flavonoid passion flower extract (Valverde) seems to inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2, while another extract with a lower flavonoid concentration (Arkocaps) shows less potent inhibition. OATPs are responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds into the body; however, the specific activities of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 are not well characterized.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
