L-Theanine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by NutraBio
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Theanine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Theanine by NutraBio
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-theanine, an amino acid found naturally in green tea. L-Theanine is thought to promote relaxation and support cognitive function without causing drowsiness in most people.
The capsule also contains two inactive ingredients—hypromellose and water—which are used to form and fill the capsule shell.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Theanine is rated possibly effective for supporting cognitive function. For other uses—age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, generalized anxiety, OCD, and cancer—the evidence we hold is insufficient to make a reliable rating.
Talk with your doctor about what the research supports for your particular interest.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, but long-term safety hasn't been thoroughly studied. Common side effects include headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep duration, and more vivid dreams.
One pediatric case of facial tics was reported, though the child had a history of tics and they stopped when the supplement was discontinued. There isn't enough safety data during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product if you take antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications)—theanine may lower your blood pressure further. Also flag it if you use CNS depressants (sedatives, sleeping pills, opioids) or serotonergic drugs (antidepressants), though the risk with those is smaller.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Theanine may help with focus and relaxation, but the evidence is solid only for cognitive function—and limited there. If you take blood pressure medication or sedative drugs, you'll want to check this with your doctor or pharmacist first, since theanine could amplify their effects.
For short-term use in otherwise healthy people, it's generally well tolerated, but long-term safety data is sparse.

L-Theanine by NutraBio Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
NutraBio L-Theanine interacts with blood pressure medications through its ability to lower blood pressure itself.
If you're on antihypertensive drugs (like ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, or calcium channel blockers), theanine may strengthen their effect, which could drop your blood pressure too far.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Theanine may also have minor additive sedative effects when paired with CNS depressants (drugs that slow the nervous system, like benzodiazepines or opioids), though it's unclear how much this matters in real-world use. There's also a theoretical concern with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants and similar medications), but clinical studies conflict on whether theanine actually affects serotonin, and no cases of serotonin syndrome have been reported with it.
Altogether, these interactions span 565 individual medications. Before you start L-Theanine, use the search tool on this page to check your exact prescriptions, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist—especially if you take blood pressure medication.

For each ingredient in L-Theanine with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
