Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: L-tryptophan 500 mg per capsule. L-tryptophan is an amino acid your body uses to make serotonin, a chemical messenger in your brain involved in mood and sleep.

The capsule also contains inactive ingredients (cellulose, cellulose powder, and stearic acid), which are common fillers and binders.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see L-tryptophan's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: support positive mood and healthy sleep.
  • We looked for evidence on: Anxiety, Depression, Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), sleep quality — and 2 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: L-tryptophan is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Depression (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: L-tryptophan is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Anxiety, Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

The evidence for L-tryptophan is mixed and limited. For depression, the data we hold rates it as possibly ineffective.

For anxiety, athletic performance, teeth grinding (bruxism), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, there isn't enough reliable evidence to know whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-Tryptophan is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are mild: belching, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, flatulence, headache, heartburn, lightheadedness, nausea, stomach pain, blurred vision, and vomiting.

A serious but rare side effect is eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS), a neurological disorder. Almost all cases in the US were traced to contaminated L-tryptophan from a single Japanese manufacturer in the late 1980s; modern products are no longer from that contaminated source.

However, the supplement does carry a past safety scare, so proceed with caution. Regarding pregnancy: the safety data is mixed—some evidence suggests it may be unsafe during pregnancy, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant.

For breastfeeding, safety is not established, so it's best to avoid it and speak with your healthcare provider.

At least one ingredient has a documented Major-severity interaction. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — L-tryptophan.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Major.
  • For scale: 394 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're on any central nervous system (CNS) depressants—sedatives, sleep aids, pain medications, or anxiety drugs—because the combination could cause dangerous drowsiness. Also check if you take serotonergic medications, including antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics) or certain migraine drugs, as combining them with L-tryptophan could raise serotonin to unsafe levels.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

L-Tryptophan may be worth considering if you're interested in mood or sleep support and your doctor has ruled out safer options—but the evidence for most uses is thin. Skip it if you take sedatives, sleep aids, or antidepressants without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist.

If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk it over with your own healthcare provider before starting.

L-Tryptophan 500 mg by LuckyVitamin: Common Questions

Does L-Tryptophan 500 mg by LuckyVitamin interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, L-Tryptophan 500 mg has a known interaction with 394 medications, including 248 rated major. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
L-Tryptophan 500 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is L-tryptophan, and what does it do?
L-tryptophan is an amino acid your body uses to manufacture serotonin, a chemical messenger involved in mood and sleep regulation. Your body cannot make it on its own, so you get it from food (turkey, chicken, eggs, cheese) or supplements.
Can I take this if I'm on an antidepressant?
Not without checking first. L-tryptophan and antidepressants both affect serotonin, and combining them carries a Moderate risk of serotonin syndrome. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this supplement to your regimen.
Will L-tryptophan help my depression or anxiety?
For depression, the evidence suggests it's probably not effective. For anxiety, there isn't enough reliable data to say whether it works. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you weigh this against other, better-studied options.
Is L-tryptophan safe? What about the eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome scare I've heard about?
L-tryptophan is generally well tolerated, with mild side effects like nausea, headache, and drowsiness being the most common. The serious neurological condition EMS did occur in the late 1980s, but nearly all cases came from contaminated L-tryptophan from one Japanese manufacturer—not modern supplements. Still, the product carries a history of contamination, so use it with caution.
What side effects should I watch for?
Most people experience mild effects: belching, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, headache, or stomach upset. Serious side effects are rare but can include muscle weakness or neurological symptoms. If anything concerns you, stop and talk to your pharmacist or doctor.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data is mixed for pregnancy—some evidence suggests it may not be safe—so talk with your doctor or pharmacist first. For breastfeeding, safety hasn't been established, so it's best to avoid it and discuss alternatives with your healthcare provider.
