HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Tyrosine 500 mg by Bluebonnet
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: L-tyrosine, an amino acid your body uses to make dopamine, norepinephrine, and thyroid hormones. The capsule also holds cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide as inactive ingredients — these are fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Not established
L-tyrosine is effective for phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare genetic condition. For cognitive function and memory, the evidence is possibly effective — meaning there's some promise but more research is needed.
For athletic performance, the evidence points toward it being possibly ineffective. For alcohol use disorder and dementia, we don't yet have enough reliable evidence to rate it one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tyrosine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects reported are fatigue, headache, heartburn, and nausea — especially at higher doses.
There's not enough safety data to recommend regular supplemental doses without a doctor's guidance. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data available, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before starting if you take levodopa (a Parkinson's drug) — separate doses by at least 2 hours if your doctor approves combining them. Also double-check if you're on thyroid hormone medications, since tyrosine may intensify their effects.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist to confirm it's safe alongside your specific prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-tyrosine may help with PKU and possibly with focus and memory, though the evidence for those is still developing. If you take levodopa for Parkinson's or any thyroid medication, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bluebonnet's L-Tyrosine 500 mg can interact with levodopa (a Parkinson's medication) and thyroid hormone medications, both at Moderate severity.
Tyrosine and levodopa compete for absorption in your gut, which may reduce how well levodopa works — if you take both, separate them by at least 2 hours. Tyrosine is also a building block for thyroid hormones, so taking it alongside thyroid medication might increase your thyroid hormone levels unexpectedly.
