Lavender Ingredients & Drug Interactions

What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lavender against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lavender flower extract from Lavandula angustifolia. The liquid form also includes certified organic cane alcohol and distilled water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on lavender is mixed and depends on what you're using it for. It's rated possibly effective for dysmenorrhea (period pain).
For cancer-related pain it's rated possibly ineffective. For alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), pre-procedural anxiety, and cancer-related fatigue, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lavender flower extract in food and medicinal amounts is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth or applied to skin. The most common side effects are mild — breath odor, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, belching, headache, and nausea.
Some people develop allergic skin reactions to lavender oil on contact. One rare concern: a few cases of breast tissue growth in young boys have been reported with topical lavender oil use, though this is uncommon.
Because safety data is limited, you should use medicinal amounts only with your doctor's approval. The essential oil form is toxic if swallowed, so this product—a liquid extract—is safer than pure oil, but you still shouldn't ingest essential oils.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, there isn't enough data to know whether medicinal amounts are safe, so talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take any CNS depressant—sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, antidepressants that also sedate, opioid pain relievers, muscle relaxants, or antihistamines used for sleep—check your exact medication against the search tool on this page before adding lavender. The interaction is moderate, not major, but worth confirming beforehand with your own doctor or pharmacist.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Herb Pharm Lavender might help with period pain, but evidence for other uses is weak or absent. If you take a CNS depressant (anything for sleep, anxiety, or opioid pain relief), check the interaction section on this page and confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Otherwise, it's generally well tolerated at standard doses.

Lavender by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herb Pharm Lavender contains lavender flower extract, which has documented interactions with one medication category: CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, opioids, and similar medications that slow brain activity).
The concern is moderate — lavender might strengthen both the therapeutic and unwanted effects of these drugs, though clinical studies of lavender at standard doses haven't reported this as a major problem in practice.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although laboratory research shows lavender has sedative properties, patients taking approved forms like Silexan 160 mg daily for 10 weeks or lavender powder 1 gram daily for 2 months didn't report serious added drowsiness or impairment. Still, the theoretical risk means you should check your exact medications — especially anything prescribed for sleep, anxiety, or pain — before you start.
Although these interactions span 248 individual medications, the interaction data we hold covers only the CNS depressant category. If you're on a prescription for sleep, anxiety, depression, opioid pain relief, or a related condition, run it through the search tool on this page or talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.

Lavender flower (Lavandula angustifolia) extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, lavender might potentiate the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of CNS depressants.
Laboratory research suggests that lavender has sedative effects. However, clinical studies in patients taking oral lavender oil (Silexan) 160 mg for 10 weeks or taking lavender flower powder 1 gram daily for 2 months have not reported side effects of drowsiness, sedation, or sleepiness. There is still some concern that higher doses or different preparations of lavender might have additive effects with CNS depressant medications.
