Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This powder contains one active ingredient: lemon balm extract. That's it — no fillers or other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lemon balm is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) and for stress and depression, though the evidence base isn't conclusive. These ratings mean clinical trials show promise, but more or stronger research is needed to confirm benefit.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults. Some trial participants reported dizziness or sedation, but at rates no higher than placebo.
One case report described heart rhythm changes in a person using a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, though it's unclear if lemon balm alone was responsible — the condition reversed when the product was stopped. High-dose or long-term safety hasn't been well studied.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise. While breastfeeding, limited information exists — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, pain relievers) or thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Both carry Moderate interaction risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking for a possibly effective option for cold sores or stress, lemon balm has a decent safety track record for short-term use. However, if you take sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, other CNS depressants, or thyroid hormone replacement, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the interactions are real and could matter for your specific situation.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbadiet's Lemon Balm Extract Powder contains one active ingredient — lemon balm — that does interact with medications.
The most serious concerns are with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, pain relievers) and thyroid hormone replacement therapy, both at Moderate severity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
With CNS depressants, lemon balm may add to their sedating effects, which could amplify drowsiness or impair alertness. The mechanism isn't fully proven in humans, but animal studies and early human work suggest lemon balm itself has sedating activity.
With thyroid hormones, lemon balm constituents appear in lab studies to bind to thyroid-regulating receptors in a way that could blunt the hormone's effect, though this hasn't been conclusively demonstrated in people taking both together. Altogether, these interactions span 264 individual medications.
Check your exact medications using the tool on this page before you start. If you take any CNS depressant or thyroid hormone, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Lemon Balm Extract, Powder
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
